The Amalfi Coast from the water: exploring the coast by private boat from Torre di Civita

A different angle on a familiar coastline
There is a version of the Amalfi Coast that most visitors know: the coastal road, the village squares, the terraced hillsides seen from above or from the water’s edge. It is genuinely extraordinary, and it justifies the reputation this coastline has built over centuries of drawing people from across the world.
And then there is the version that is only available from the water: the coast at sea level, approached as sailors, fishermen and traders have always approached it. Hidden coves invisible from the road, caves opening into the cliff face, and water changing from the deep blue of the gulf to extraordinary greens and turquoises near the rocks.
This is the Amalfi Coast that Torre di Civita makes available through two boats kept directly by Greyheath Hospitality and operated to the same standard as the estate itself.
The two boats: different characters, different possibilities
Torre di Civita offers two boats, each with a distinct character. The San Michele is a traditional gozzo, hand-built in mahogany, one of only three ever built to this design. Its hybrid engine allows it to enter a bay in silence, made for comfort at anchor and ease under way.
The Nathania is a state-of-the-art semi-rigid with twin Mercury outboards, engineered for performance and finished for guests who want to cover the coast efficiently. Its shallow draft gives access to beaches and coves that deeper-hulled boats cannot reach; Capri, Ischia, Paestum and the Cilento coast are within realistic reach for a day trip.
What the coast looks like from the water
From the land, the coast is something you are within: cliffs above, the road ahead, and the sea to the side. From the water, it becomes a panorama: the full profile of the cliff face visible at once, the relationship between villages and landscape legible in a way the land never allows.
The Tyrrhenian Sea along the Amalfi Coast ranges from the deep blue of open water to extraordinary shades of green and turquoise in the shallows. These are colours that photographs approximate but do not capture, and that being on the water makes immediately present.
The hidden coast: what is only accessible from the water
One of the strongest reasons to spend time on the water is access to parts of the coast that are simply not reachable any other way. Caves cut back into the cliff, coves where the bottom is visible from the surface, beaches that exist only at certain states of the tide, and headlands that can only be understood from the sea.
The Nathania gives access to many places that deeper-hulled boats cannot reach. The San Michele, with its silent hybrid engine, allows arrival without disturbance, settling at anchor while guests swim in water entirely theirs for the time they are there.
A day on the water from Torre di Civita
Both boats are kept and operated by Greyheath directly. A day might begin with the San Michele in morning light, stopping in a cove for a swim, before continuing with the Nathania to a beach, headland or Capri for lunch. It ends back at the estate in time for the golden hour over the olive grove and Gulf of Salerno.
The two resident chefs can prepare a picnic for the boat using the same ingredients and standard as every meal on the property. A lunch at anchor in a hidden cove, with the Amalfi Coast cliff above and the water below, is an experience no restaurant on the coast can replicate.
Ravello, Positano, Capri: what is within reach
Positano reveals a different structure from the sea: houses climbing the cliff in layers and the beach below. Capri, approximately an hour away by fast boat, offers the Blue Grotto, the Faraglioni and beaches accessible only from the water. The less visited Cilento coast to the south is also within reach for a day trip.
